Why We Go Device-Free
In our hyperconnected world, phones have become both bridge and barrier to authentic connection. While they keep us linked to distant networks, they often pull us away from the people right in front of us. By temporarily setting our devices aside, we create space for the kind of presence that makes genuine connection possible.
When phones are put away, something shifts. Eye contact increases. Conversations deepen. People listen differently when they're not mentally composing their next social media post or anticipating the next notification. The result is the rare experience of being truly seen and heard.
Not Anti-Technology, Just Pro-Connection
This isn't about technology being bad. It's about connection being good. Removing the option to check out, even for a few hours, is what makes it possible to actually be with the people in the room.
How It Works
Arrive as you are - Bring your phone, or don't. Either is welcome.
Hand it over, if you brought it - Your phone goes into our lockbox for the duration of the session.
Get it back whenever you need it - Just let a facilitator know, and we'll unlock it for you. No waiting for the session to end.
Reconnect at the close - Everyone's phone is returned when the experience wraps.
We’ll help you every step of the way before, during and after the event with securing and unlocking your device.
What to Expect
You might feel a moment of anxiety when your phone is out of reach, that's completely normal. Most people report feeling surprisingly liberated within the first few minutes. You can access your phone at any time, and you'll likely notice details about conversations and connections you would have missed otherwise.
The temporary distance creates permanent memories. Participants consistently report that removing digital distractions leads to conversations they actually remember and connections that continue long after the event ends.
Device FAQ
Do I have to bring my phone at all?
No. If you'd rather leave it at home or in your car, we love that too.
Why do you keep community events small?
Part of it is what makes the Connection Experience work, small rotating groups create real conversation. It's also what makes going device-free feel safe: your phone is never out of sight in a crowd, it's in a small, secure box, in a small, intimate room.
Can I get my phone back if I need it during the session?
Yes, anytime. Just let a facilitator know and we'll unlock the box for you. There's no waiting until the end.
Is device-free part of every offering?
It's core to Community Events, built into the experience. For the Team Connection Experience, it's something we bring to the table and agree on together with your team. For the Community Connection Experience, it's a natural fit that we're glad to build in, though the Connection Experience itself stands on its own either way.
